Latvian pottery, or ceramics, is one of the oldest art forms in our country, originating already in the Neolithic period. Latgale pottery is the best-known sub-sector of Latvian pottery, but black ceramics, which appeared on the territory of Latvia only in the 13th century, have been reaping special laurels of popularity in recent years.
Black ceramic works are created by hand, and get their dark shade at the final stage of firing, when after 12 hours of "rest" in the heat of 1000 degrees, the kiln is properly covered, smoke is produced in the process and clay vessels are saturated with carbon. In this process, the dishes also gain their strength.
